Is it just me, or do the fellowship cloaks look really thin?

Not only do they appear very thin, there is also a very unusual pattern to the fabric that appears to be woven rather than printed. I also noticed that the front edge does not seem to be hemmed; either this fabric doesn't fray or this is the selvage, but neither option makes sense.

Ah, fabric that doesn't fray...a dream come true. I'd live in Middle-earth just for that. grin But yes, I know what you mean about the pattern being woven in there. Another question, why does the cloak look so thin, but the actual hoods look very thick? If they were going to have to make the hoods thick, why not make the whole thing thick and full? It's weird, because I'm trying to think about the cloaks as I saw them in TTT yesterday, and when Frodo covers Sam and himself with his cloak, it seemed to me that it was thicker there...well, looks like I'll have to go see TTT a fourth time. wink

EDIT: Here's another pic, Frodo this time: http://councilofelrond.com/modules/My_eGallery/gallery/characters/frodo/totalfilmseite11.jpg

Well, the hoods are definitely thicker because they are self-lined, though I have no idea why, unless they were trying to avoid a visible hem around the face edge. I suppose they also figured that the hood didn't need to be transparent; there weren't going to be too many instances where you would have occation to see through them.

I didn't pay attention to the cloak in the scene where Frodo covers Sam, but it could very well be a movie trick (i.e. they substitute another material for the cloak just to make the scene work).

Yes, I'm sure when they're actually under it that that's some movie magic there, haha, but when he's throwing the cloak over them, in that instance I think it's their actual cloaks. I may be wrong, of course. hehe

Check out this link!

http://www.tepapa.govt.nz/Rings/Store_contents.htm

These are the people that actually made the cloak fabric. They also sell a cloak but the style is nowhere close to the ones in the movie. It sounds like you might also be able to order fabric from them. Check out the close up of the fabric--it has that incredible pattern that we have been talking about.

Wow, awsome find Ithilwyn! That fabric is really amazing...now I want one. I used a currency converter thingy, and that's like 1000 bucks in USD...wow, don't have that much. But at least that picture will help me in picking out a fabric. Thanks!

Yeah, $1000 is a little steep for me too, but I have emailed the company to see if they can give me any information on purchasing the fabric itself. I'm sure it will still be pretty pricey, but not nearly THAT much. I'll let you know when I get a response.

The information is up on Alleycatscratch!

http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Buyit/Artisans/Stansborough.htm

It's $140 NZ per yard, and about 5 yards are recommended for a cape...

So, quite a "bargain" compared to the finished cloak? smiley

I saw it! Haha, dude, okay I went to Toronto for the weekend, and lo and behold, we were just wandering around town and I found the Stansborough fabric in a store there! It was like 300 bucks for a blanket or something...it was very cool. It's not very soft though, it's kind of rough. It was really cool though, I was like putting my hand under it and it is really thin too. If only I'd had 300 bucks to blow on it at the moment. And I'm totally blanking on the store name too. Darnit. It was pretty funny though, cuz I was flipping out in the middle of this store. Anyways..lol that's my story.

Yep I've sen it in person toosmiley AT Te Papa. The stuff used for their cloaks looked a lot thicker. It maight have been because of the construction of the cloak, or it might have been that the wool used for the cloak was the same weave but a different fibre. It also looked quite brown rather than grey which is the natural colour of the fibres, not the green as seen on film (filters, film stock etc).

See my picture I took of the fabric:
http://recital.tripod.com/costume/tepapalotr.htm
It's a clickable thumbnail right at the bottom. On my monitor it's as brown as it appeared IRL.. but then I dn't know if it's got that brown tinge on other monitorswink

Umm... nooo.. I said it looks as brown on my monitor as it did in person. Not that the monitor is what's making it brown.
