As a fan of all of Tolkien's works, I would love to see a live action film of The Hobbit. Unfortunately, I don't think it would do as well as the LOTR film trilogy. It would, of course, ride on the coattails of LOTR, but I don't think it could ever reach the same level of popularity.
My big question is who the intended audience would be. Unlike LOTR, The Hobbit is quite obviously a children's story. So, would the movie be a children's movie, a la Harry Potter, or would the movie attempt to attract an older audience? Or would a director be able to catch that ephemeral quality that makes The Hobbit appealing to young and old alike?

We are raised to honor all the wrong explorers and discoverers--theives planting flags, murderers carrying crosses. Let us at last praise the colonizers of dreams.

Yeah, it definitely wouldn't do as well as LOTR, but I think it'd be so great for the fans.

Well, I think (if one was made) it should be made ONLY by Peter Jackson and WETA. I think it would make a great live action movie, but there are a few problems with making it a film.
1. it would most undoubtedly have to be one film. not becuase of budget, PJ takes 10% of the movies and is swimming in dough now, but becuase nobody but the true fans would put up with multiple hobbit movies in the theaters, unless they came out like a few months apart. I would see it if that was the case but probably not the general public
2. it would have to be 2-3 hours like LOTR did. the problem with that is this...in my opinion, the book has about as much action (sequences and dialog scenes) as the whole of LOTR, or at least two of the books. In the Hobbit there is little back story, besides the dwarves at Moria, which is one of the reasons why LOTR is 1000 pages, because of back stories. If Tolkien had written the Hobbit after LOTR it would probably have been 1000 pages too. so to make a 3 hour movie out of the hobbit would either feel really rushed or would have to cut a LOT of scenes out. I would prefer a 4 hour movie if it were made in one movie, with a 1/2 hour break inbetween. Personally i thought that is how they should have done all the LOTR movies, 4 hours with break. then they could have kept all the stuff they deleted, but i'm digressing now...
3. the biggest problem in my mind would be the whole lack of character development with everyone especially that guy who slays the dragon, sorry can't remember his name right now but you know who i'm talking about. so say they do make a movie, you get almost 3/4 of the away through the story a up comes some strange guy living in lake town that just up and kills the dragon and then has a little more at the last big battle but that's it? if you haven't read the book, would you understand or even care who this guy is and why tolkien pays so much attention to him? probably not. what i really loved about this book is the witty nature of the characters, you just have to love the way tolkien writes the dwarf dialog and those little tid bits about bilbo constantly thinking of the shire.
all i'm saying is that i'd love for them to make it but it probably wouldn't have the same general interest as LOTR does. personally if they made another tolkien film, i think the Silmarilion would be a interesting choice for the next one. I think mostly because the plot ties more of the LOTR characters and middle earth together, and the whole Luthien and Behren. i haven't read it yet but i heard there isn't much dialog, well that may prove to be difficult one to handle but it could be done. the love stories sell in the cinemas.
actually, i've heard that PJ would do it if they asked him, getting back to the hobbit movie, and Ian Mckelen said he would love to play gandalf again. there is a website that has a petition you can sign for making the hobbit a live action film. and you can also vote for who should direct it (PJ, Speilberg or Lucas). seems an obvious choise there! In the same interview Ian said he's pushing to make the hobbit as a multi-episode, made-for-tv movie. personally that might work better for the general public but typically those ventures have smaller budgets and don't do it for me as visually the way a feature film on the silver screen does.
any thought's about other tolkien movies? I also think the Adventures of Tom Bombadil would make a great film or mini-series !?! heck, they could even add the scene they deleted from FOTR and bring back frodo, sam, merry and pipin!
