For anybody that's seen the extended version already, how'd you guys like the Lorien scene? In my opinion, more Haldir is always a good thing... grin

I totally agree with you Madeleine!! More of Legolas definately is a good thing grin The scene gave more insight into the characters than the original version, which I liked too smiley

I enoyed the fact that the scene developed into it's own. I agree with you Rachael, it did give the characters more insight than the original. To me it somehow completed it and the scene didn't seem so.. rushed? Perhaps quick is the word I am looking for ^^;

However....

I have to agree with Sarah; more of Haldir is always a good thing. He is my favorite male elf! ^^

As for me, the extended scenes were a great thing. I'm very pleased with the Lothlorien extended scene(s). I've been trying to figure out what Gimli says to Haldir in Khuzdul (dwarvish) but am not having any luck. Dwarvish wasn't developed by Tolkien as thoroughly as Quenya and Sindarin (elvin tongues)... but I've wondered if the linguists working on the film didn't simply expand on it (at least enough to construct an "uncourtious" remark for Gimli to utter)...

To other ends, more Haldir...more Legolas...doesn't do anything for me (like it seems to be doing for others). Where are all the really cute lady elves hiding?...

(laughs) I can only assume the female elves arel running away from the amount of fangirls that have entered Lothlorien and Rivendell searching for Legolas (and Haldir). ^^;

Mithion, whatever Gimli said, it wasn't curteous. *L*

And from the look on Haldir's face, I think HE understood!!

I too wondered about the female Elves though... do they all just wear dresses and stay in their tree houses, or do they get to roam the woods with the protectors shooting Orc now-and-again?

AngelicMaiden, *LOL* yeah! I have a feeling humans would really scare a species such as Elves anyway... but the cute ones being chased by young girls... *heheh*

Sarah, As for that scene, yeah... I think that was my favorite addition to the Extended Version... Though, was it just me, or did they cut some lines from when Haldir et al first encountered the Fellowship. That part seemed abbreviated, but I haven't looked at my first version since I got the extended. (yeah, I bought both- unknowingly though *L* ...long story).

I'm all for more Haldir as well. He had such awesome Elven presence. And Aragorn arguing with him was amazing.... I don't know why, but it struck me how they related to each other... I guess it just seemed like Haldir had lots of say in what went on in Lorien and who got through... and Aragorn KNEW that, but was still confident he could have a big influence on him... I would love to know what they were saying... Is it in the books? Or was that just thrown in there and they were more likely speaking gibberish?

Also, I liked more Galadriel and Celeborn. Galadriel laughing at Gimli gave her a rounded personality... And when Celeborn is instructing Aragorn, it made him look much more kingly than the Galadriel arm ornament he seemed to be in the first version. wink

As for Elves- I like them all... I like Eomer too though... his armor just ROCKS!!!!

Actually, I hope the female elves do not just sit in their tree houses and wait for longingly (sp?) for their loved one to return. -.-;

JediElfQueen, I had the same feeling with Haldir's lines. My brother assures me that it is the same, but something was missing. Actually, occassionaly I felt that certain lines were abbrivated. But that might have been just I thinking that. Perhaps tomorrow, I shall just watch both Lorien scenes to check on that for you, as well as the information about the book. I don't think it was in the book, but do not quote me on that.

Finally someone else who enjoyed more Galadriel and Celeborn scenes. I completely agree with you. ^^

As for Elves- I like them all... ^^ Exactly...

AngelicMaiden , Haldir's my favorite male elf too! As for Craig Parker, the actor that plays him, he is soooo fine. He's got that sexy mystique about him; I love it. smiley

Sarah, I love your new Haldir fansite. As I said before, he was my favorite male elf since I read the books when I was little and I still stand by it ^^ It's nice to see someone else who likes him too ^^

I too really enjoyed the extended Lorien scene. It is such and integral part of the book and got such short shrift in the theatrical release. It was good to see at least some of it added back in. What had really disturbed me in seeing the theatrical version orginially was that there were scenes we saw in trailers that didn't make it into the movie; but I suppose that is the case with most films and at least we got those scenes back in the extended version.

I completely agree with JediElfQueen that it was good to see Celeborn as more than just Galadriel's "arm ornament" (I love your phrase!). Even in the book Celeborn SEEMS to play such a small role that we forget he is a wise leader among the Elves; his advice to Aragorn subtly helps to point that out.

As for this being my favorite addition to the extended version, I can't say that it is. My favorite was the addition to the council of Elrond when Gandalf recites the ring inscription in the Black Speech. (Did anyone notice that even in the theatrical release the voice of the ring is saying those same lines during the council?)

Mithion, where have you been looking for a translation of Gimli's line? I would assume that someone would have done the work and posted it somewhere, but I haven't looked myself. I have a book by Ruth Noel on Tolkien's invented languages that might be helpful; if you like, when I get a free moment I will see if it can shed some light on the subject.

Oh! Please do. smiley I'm so curious what he said! *L*

My guess would be something about how the Dwarves wouldn't have anything to do with the Elves anyway... something that shows the dwarves don't trust or like Elves. I doubt it was personally insulting...

Anyone else want to guess?

BTW, I did relook at the Theatrical release DVD and the first meeting of the Fellowship in Lothlorien IS abbreviated... It leaves out a line by Gimli, "These woods are treterous, we should turn back." And a line from Haldir, "You have entered the realm of the Lady of the Wood, you can not turn back.... come, she is waiting."

In the extended version, they chop it off right before Gimli speaks.

Well, I just happened to stumble upon a great website that is dedicated to the languages of middle earth--it's called Fellowship of the Word-Smiths and I found that they have translations of the elvish and dwarvish dialogue that is is the in the movies so far.

[http://www.elvish.org/gwaith/movie.htm]

not sure if the link works, but it's definitely worth a look for anyone interested in middle earth's languages and writing. The part in Lorien is #35 on the list of translations; evidently what Gimli is saying does not mean anything at all, according to the people who run the site, which is really interesting because it sounds like he is actually speaking in dwarvish; of course coming from me, who knows absolutely nothing about elvish and dwarvish etc. that doesn't mean much but i still think they are cool to listen to and maybe learn about someday smiley

I hope this helps!

You know, the more I think about it, the less I am pleased with the addition of the scene where Aragorn and Haldir are arguing. If I remember correctly, Haldir wasn't pleased with them coming to Lothlorien, but Galadriel already knew they were coming and had given permission for them to enter. The only problem was that the required Gimli to be blindfolded, and while everyone had a problem with that (especially Gimli), Aragorn rather quickly offered the solution that they all be blindfolded. I don't really remember it being something that was debated at length.

We didn't get to see much of Celeborn in the cinemas, but after I saw the extended scenes, I totally fell in love with the guy. And Haldir is just super, but they cut the original material involving him telling the Fellowship they have entered the realm of the lady of the wood. I wish they had left that in as well.
