This is the book that makes it obvious that the three were intended as one. There is no way to finish this book and not immediately pick up the third and begin reading.
This book also convinced me that Tolkien is a master of comic relief on the level of Shakespeare. In the midst of gloom and doom there are some hillarious moments that even beat out Macbeth's porter.
The only draw back in my mind is the separation of the two storylines. Although I see the necessity, it makes it difficult to figure out the time frame of various events.

We are raised to honor all the wrong explorers and discoverers--theives planting flags, murderers carrying crosses. Let us at last praise the colonizers of dreams.

I only voted 3 becuase like the second person said, it's not a stand-alone type of book. the comedy is really great and i do agree a bit about the separation of storylines.
i did notice two subtle, well one subtle and one odvious, aspects in the writings. one is the use of color, everything is grey...i like this because it hint at the hopeful, uncertain character of the books. there's never any hint that things will get better untill the very end and then even then it's still grey, although i'll have to read grey havens again becuase i think tolkien changes the tone to golden, but that may be the hobbit lurking into my memory.
the second is in responce to the second comment. one way that tolkien links timeframes, at least in my opinion, was with the weather. there are certain instances, i can't remember any specific except for the dark cloud reaching out from Mordor, that appear in many of the chapters of the different storylines that sort of link timeframes together.
so 3 for it's sequel quality but 5 for overall quality. of course that's what i rank ROTK but i consider all three one book, since that's the original intention.
